BNTU & Education Minister Make Nice on School Discipline
Two Fridays ago – one thousand teachers marched on Independence Hill against the Education and Training Bill. They wanted the Minister of Education to remove the ban on corporal punishment from the Bill but he didn’t and the Bill was passed. And while that might have been the crossing of a Rubicon, the Union and the Minister have apparently made peace. Teacher's Union Gives GOB Ultimatum
The Belize National Teacher’s Union held a press conference in Belize City this afternoon to make public their ultimatum to government about the collective bargaining agreement. BNTU President Jaime Panti says that government has been dragging its feet on the agreement and the union has had enough. He told us after the press conference that government has one week to act or else.

Galen University Under New Owner and Management
Galen University in the Cayo District is under new ownership; the new man at the helm is Dr. Louis Zabaneh – who is also the former Chairman of the University of Belize. And now at Galen he is the new Chairman and owner. Pricewaterhouse Coopers and Peacework Award Promise Scholarships
And 113 high school students who have been doing the right thing in their studies will also receive scholarships. The donor is Price Waterhouse Coopers – the world’s largest accounting firm. They have 140,000 employees spread out in 150 countries and last year they made US$28.1 billion. So their donation of $70,000 to high school students in Belize probably isn’t a big deal to the firm. Orange Walk BNTU Rejects Teaching Services Commission
Last week the Belize National Teacher’s Union and Minister of Education Patrick Faber made peace when government agreed to provide clarifications about the proposed Teaching Services Commission and even pushed back it’s date to be tabled in the House to next year. Baptist High School Expels Gay Student
There is a dramatic development to report tonight in the case of Jose Garcia – a 19 year old student at the Baptist School of Adult and Continuing Education in Belmopan. We should say former student because Garcia says that on Friday he received a letter from school principal Norman Willacey – asking him to withdraw from the school and to seek counselling. We couldn’t reach Willacey for comment.
